Arsenal should turn attention to Alexander Nubel after Schalke hijack Markus Schubert transfer

Arsenal have been handed some transfer disappointment, according to reports in Germany. Markus Schubert is set to move to Schalke, according to Ran.

Schubert was expected to move to Arsenal. The Independent reported that the Gunners were closing in on the addition of Schubert on a free transfer.

The Germany U21 international’s contract with Dynamo Dresden contract expires this summer. And he will be leaving as a free agent.

But contrary to this report by The Independent, Schubert now seems to be heading to Schalke. The 21-year-old will be making a move to the Bundesliga.

This is a disappointing transfer development for Unai Emery. He wanted Schubert to provide short-term cover for Bernd Leno and compete with him in the long run.

But Arsenal still need to find Leno’s deputy after Petr Cech retired. This is why they should now turn their attention to Alexander Nubel.

If Schubert joins Schalke, he will be competing with Nubel for the Schalke goalkeeping spot. Nubel played 22 times for Schalke last season, including 18 in the Bundesliga and twice in the Champions League.

This would not be the first time the 22-year-old would have to compete with Schubert. Both players vie for the one goalkeeping spot in the Germany U21 line-up.

At the moment, Nubel is the number one choice for the young Germans. That suggests he could be the man for Arsenal. If Schubert does complete a move to Schalke, Arsenal should ask about Nubel.
