Arsenal should look to sign both Ryan Bertrand and Josh Doig this summer - TBR View

The upcoming summer transfer window is shaping up to be one of the most crucial and productive in some for Arsenal if reports are to be believed.

Both the Athletic and the Guardian report that a major squad overhaul is on Mikel Arteta’s agenda this off-season, with the Gunners keen on both selling players who are surplus to requirements as well as bring in new signings who have the quality and attitude to bring Arsenal back to the top of the English football game.

One player who is expected to leave north London this summer is left-back Sead Kolasinac, who is currently on loan with Bundesliga side Schalke, with the German side set to be relegated to the second-tier for next season.

Whilst it is unsure if the Bosnian international will stay with Schalke next season, it is almost certain that Kolasinac will leave the Emirates this summer, which means that Arsenal require an extra left-back, with Kieran Tierney the sole specialist in that position in the Gunners squad.

Indeed, this season has seen the likes of Bukayo Saka, Cedric and Granit Xhaka fill in the role with Tierney frequently out on the injury table, yet early reports seem to suggest that Arsenal are considering their options for the left-back position this summer, with football.london reporting that Arteta is eyeing up both Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand as well as Hibernian teenager Josh Doig.

Yet whilst it might make sense just to sign one or the other, Arsenal are in a position where they are not only financially able to sign both players, but the Gunners should be encouraged to do so.

Bertrand is an extremely experienced Premier League defender with well over 250 appearances in the division, whilst Doig has just completed his first full-season with Hibs, winning the SFWA Young Player of the Year award, an accolade Tierney won twice during his early years with Celtic.

The two players offer similar needs Arsenal are lacking as well as fulfilling different long-term roles with the club.

Bertrand would be useful to the Gunners for the next one to two seasons, whilst Doig is a starlet who Arteta can add to the squad with the future in mind, especially with the Daily Mail reporting via Not The Old Firm that the teenager could be available for as little as £1.2m.

The Gunners will likely see plenty of change this summer, and the left-back position could become an area of the pitch that transforms to one of the most under-manned to one that is set for both the present and future should Arsenal sign both Bertrand and Doig.
