Arsenal have had some real talent come through their academy ranks in recent times and Reiss Nelson is another that has managed to make a step up to the senior group.
The 20-year-old has been with the Gunners since the age of nine and he made his first-team debut back in 2017.
He was sent out on loan during the 2018/19 campaign to German club Hoffenheim, with his year in the Bundesliga proving to be the making of him.
The right-winger scored seven goals in 29 games across all competitions for Hoffenheim, before linking up with the Arsenal first-team squad at the beginning of this season and being integrated to the main squad.
It’s not quite been the smooth transition he may have hoped for though at the Emirates Stadium, with two goals and three assists in just 16 senior appearances.
Nelson is certainly a serious young talent with a big future ahead of him, but Arsenal should definitely consider giving him another loan next season as it would speed up his development and give him more valuable minutes.
The England Under-21 international should be handed a first loan to a Premier League club, as that’s exactly what he needs to get better with exposure to the English top-flight.
Nelson has shown glimpses of brilliance this season with his pace and directness in the Arsenal XI, but can’t seem to get enough minutes and has even dropped down to the Under-23s at times.
The attacker has the support of current boss Mikel Arteta, who has previously tipped him for a big future.
“What I will say is that Reiss has the potential to do whatever he wants. If he wants to do it, wants to learn and wants to challenge himself he can be a top, top player for this football club,” Arteta said, as quoted by the Guardian in January.
Nelson would benefit far more from a loan stint away from North London next season and it could be extremely helpful in the long run.
