According to the Express, Arsenal boss Unai Emery is hoping to make two more signings this summer. The Gunners’ coach is reportedly seeking to complete a deal for Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney, and is also keen to bring a new centre-back to the Emirates Stadium.
The need for a new centre-back will become particularly pressing should the current Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny depart the north London club. The veteran defender recently refused to travel on the club’s pre-season tour in an effort to force an exit.
On top of that, Shkodran Mustafi may also be sold. The German’s agent has denied links with a move to Roma, as reported by Romanews. However, the 27-year-old could yet make a switch elsewhere. Arsenal are likely desperate to rid themselves of Mustafi. The 20-cap Germany international has been an absolute flop since his £35 million move to Arsenal in 2016.
The exits of Koscielny and Mustafi would leave the Gunners in dire need of a new centre-back. To fill that gap in his squad, Emery should look to James Tarkowski.
The 26-year-old has been a consistently excellent performer for Burnley in recent seasons. What’s more, Arsenal likely have the financial firepower needed to prise the two-cap England international away from Turf Moor.
Tarkowski is ready to make the next step up in his career. The Gunners could offer the defender the chance to prove himself at the highest level. For their part, Arsenal would be acquiring an experienced, reliable and Premier League-proven centre-back. He would bring stability and authority to their defence.
Tarkowski is exactly what Arsenal need, and the player himself needs to move to a club of such stature to prove just how good he can really be. Therefore, this would be a switch that suits both parties.
