Arsenal should act after report’s Wojciech Szczesny claim

Arsenal’s goalkeeper situation looks set to be an issue for Mikel Arteta to address once again this summer.

Last year, it was the form of Emi Martinez leaving Arteta with food for thought. The Argentinian more than proved that he was too good to be an understudy for Bernd Leno.

Ultimately, Leno stayed as number one and Martinez left. Alex Runarsson arrived. But it quickly became clear that he was not able to fill the void.

That prompted the Gunners to act once again in January. Mat Ryan came in on loan from Brighton.

It remains to be seen whether Ryan will be kept on beyond this season. But that is not the only dilemma Arteta may have been left with.

Leno has made a handful of mistakes in recent times – most notably, scoring an own goal for the winner in Arsenal’s defeat to Everton on Friday.

With the summer looming, Leno’s dip in form may have left Arteta with plenty to ponder.

And what may make the Arsenal boss’ decision even tougher is a report from Italy which has made a claim about Wojciech Szczesny’s future.

According to Calciomercato, the 31-year-old could return to the Premier League with Juventus keen on Gianluigi Donnarumma.

It must be noted that the report claims that there is nothing concrete linking Szczesny with a return to England just yet.

But if he is available, Arsenal should surely ask the question.

The Poland international has arguably improved significantly since leaving the Emirates in 2017.

He has made 26 Serie A appearances for the Old Lady this season, conceding just 26 goals. And he may well be heading into the peak years of his career.

Much may depend on how much Juve want for Szczesny if he is available. But if Leno’s form does not pick up, Arsenal should not allow Szczesny to head elsewhere this summer.

Szczesny told Arsenal’s official website just last year that he missed playing at the Emirates. He also outlined that his dream was to be a one-club man during his career due to his love for Arsenal.

Of course, that chance has now gone. But if he is set to be replaced as number one in Turin and Arsenal offer him the opportunity to come back, surely he would struggle to say no.
