Arsenal set to swoop for Everton loanee Gomes after failing to land him last summer
Arsenal are considering a summer swoop for playmaker Andre Gomes, who is currently on loan at Everton, according to ESPN.
They report that the Gunners are keen on the Portuguese international – with Unai Emery a fan of the player – after an impressive first season in English football, at Goodison Park.
The report says that Gomes’ parent club Barcelona want 30m euros (£26m) for him as they embark on a summer clear out to raise funds for a squad overhaul.
And ESPN claim that Arsenal wanted Gomes last summer as well, before he went to Merseyside, and Emery will be hoping that it’s second time lucky.
Now that they’ve seen that Gomes can cut it in the Premier League, it’s no surprise that Arsenal want to reenter the race for the silky midfielder.
With Aaron Ramsey set to leave this summer for Juventus, Emery needs a player who can offer creativity from deep.
And while Gomes may not be able to offer Ramsey’s goalscoring output, he is arguably a better passer than the departing Welshman.
£26m, in the current market, isn’t too bad in terms of value for money either, which is important to Arsenal because Ramsey is leaving for free and they are being notoriously frugal in the transfer market, just as they were under Arsene Wenger.
