Arsenal are set to appoint former midfielder Edu as their new technical director ahead of a busy summer in the transfer market, according to the Daily Mail.

They report that the Gunners have turned to the former Brazil international to head up their recruitment in a window that will be vital if Unai Emery is to reshape the squad to his will.

And the report also says that Edu has immediately set his sights on Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha as Arsenal seek to improve their options out wide.

Samuel Umtiti is also named as a player of interest and his absence was keenly felt by the Barcelona backline last night as they collapsed against Liverpool last night.

Zaha, who earns £130,000 a week at Selhurst Park according to Spotrac, is as good as any player outside the Premier League’s top six.

He would be ideal to fill the void that existed out wide at Arsenal since they let widemen Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain leave within a matter of months last season.

The Gunners have had to plug the gaps awkwardly since, and someone with Zaha’s pace and tricks would set Emery’s already rapid attack off en route to another level.

It’s crucial that Arsenal get this summer of recruitment right after seasons of stagnation, meaning Edu might just be the most important acquisition they make.
