Leandro Trossard has been an important part of the Belgium setup for a while now, with the Arsenal star proving his quality yet again during the October international break.
The 30-year-old has found a role for himself with both club and country as a solid squad player who is clinical when opportunities arise for him.
While he hasn’t always been the most exciting pick for Mikel Arteta’s forward line, there has been a consistent quality about his performances.
Leandro Trossard has often found it more challenging to string that together with starting matches, while his versatility can often be a hindrance to building that consistency.
That isn’t just the case for Arsenal, but for Belgium too, where his latest display has come with a warning over his best position.

Belgian media claim Leandro Trossard is a better winger than a striker
Arsenal have deployed Trossard in multiple positions, including a place on the left flank and as a central striker.
So far this season, the Belgian international has been kept to the wide areas, but the national media has warned the Gunners about a possible switch back to the striker role.
It came after a dramatic 4-2 win over Wales, with the Red Devils picking up an important three points towards their World Cup qualification.
Trossard scored the final goal in stoppage time to deny any chance of a late comeback for the opposition, who had pulled one back just moments prior.
It was a better performance from the forward on the flank, compared to his display against North Macedonia as a striker a few days before.
That much was explained by Belgian media outlet Voetbalkrant, which said: “One of his best matches for the national team.
“He constantly posed a threat and delivered a brilliant cross to Meunier for the 1-2. Much better on the wing than in the centre.”
It’s a clear warning against playing Trossard as a central striker, which was an option that Arteta experimented with last season but eventually dropped.
Now, with some big games coming up, it’s clear that the 30-year-old should be competing with the other wide options rather than the strikers.

Leandro Trossard’s winger and striker statistics compared
Leandro Trossard has played a whole range of positions through his career, from wing-back and winger to attacking midfielder and striker.
His quality has often ensured that he finds a way into the team, regardless of what role he has to play.
That reliability for the Gunners is key, but the impact of that position could have a huge say in how well he plays.
| Position | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Goal involvement per appearance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Left-wing | 210 | 63 | 36 | 0.47 |
| Striker | 49 | 12 | 14 | 0.53 |
While they are different sample sizes, the career statistics suggest that, in terms of output, Trossard can be equally as effective from either role.
However, it’s his all-round play that also impacts the team, often offering much more presence out wide than up front.
While rumours persist over Trossard’s future at Arsenal, it’s clear that he is an important squad player with plenty of output.
