According to reports from ESPN yesterday, Arsenal turned down the chance to sign Kevin Volland, leaving the door ajar for the likes of Newcastle to make their move.
Volland was a long-term target of former Gunners boss, Unai Emery. However, when Mikel Arteta took over the reins, he instructed the club to call off their scouting of the German forward.

Since then, Volland has been struck down by injury. But while in the short term Arteta might feel vindicated in his decision, long term it’s a move he might live to regret.
Newcastle, then, should be looking to capitalise and make their own move for Volland this summer.
With new backing in the transfer market from their new owners, the Magpies need to make some statement signings.
And what better way to make a statement than by snapping up one of Europe’s most consistent strikers ahead of one of your Premier League rivals.
Volland a perfect if unspectacular fit for Newcastle United
While many of the Toon Army will be looking for the club to make huge splashes in the market, Volland would probably come relatively cheap in terms of strikers.
At 27, he’s already an established player and Leverkusen won’t be adding money onto his value simply because of his potential.

Volland also knows where the net is. Crucially, he also knows how to bring others into play. Last season he hit double figures for both goals and assists. He remains on course to do that this season, with nine goals and eight assists to his name.
With the likes of Almiron and Saint-Maximin buzzing about at the top end of the pitch, adding Volland to the mix could make for a lethal trio.
Newcastle’s objective will be to qualify for Europe under their new owners. Therefore, making a splash in the market and beating your rivals to those European positions to a signing is a great way to make a statement.
