Arsenal round-up: Sanchez prepares transfer request; Giroud latest; Watford keen on left-back

Alexis Sanchez was always likely to dominate the headlines during this summer transfer window and the latest development is that he could be ready to force an exit from Arsenal.

The Mirror report that he is ready to tell Arsene Wenger that he wants to join Manchester City and he could go as far as submitting an official transfer request if he isn’t granted his wish.

The Gunners have remained consistent in their message regarding the Chilean’s future, but this could potentially force them to weaken their stance.

The problem that Sanchez poses Arsenal is that he could be a distraction at the start of the season and they can’t afford that. The Gunners can’t afford a slow start and they need everyone pulling in the same direction.

His future isn’t likely to be determined until the end of the transfer window and if Wenger decides to play him in the opening few matches, it could damage the team in the short-term.

If the Chilean does start to push for a move, the club won’t have a choice but to sell him. That is the harsh reality of the situation.

Another player with an uncertain future at the club is Olivier Giroud and Everton are ready to step up their interest in the Frenchman. The French international is thought to be the number one target for Ronald Koeman as he attempts to replace Romelu Lukaku.

The Mirror report that the Toffees will press ahead with the deal this week and they won’t be prepared to wait for an answer. Giroud wants to see where he stands before making his next move, but he may not be given the time he needs.

The recruitment drive has stalled and Arsenal are struggling to attain their priority targets, which is a concern. A few sales would boost their budget and for that reason, it could be useful to sell Giroud, despite the qualities that he offers to the squad.

The Frenchman needs to play regular first-team football if he wants to make the World Cup squad and that is not likely to be on offer at the Emirates Stadium. He needs to take the move.

Meanwhile, Watford have entered the race to sign Kieran Gibbs, who is available for transfer this summer. Sky Sports report that he will be sold for the right price and Marco Silva wants to increase his quota of English players.

They could be a good fit for each other, but the left-back would have to take a pay-cut if he does leave the Emirates Stadium this summer, as no team will want to match his current salary. West Brom have dropped their interest in the player, which allows the Hornets to move to the front of the queue.

Arsenal need to move players off their wage bill if they are to continue pressing on with their own incomings. They can’t afford to have big earners remain at the club if they are surplus to requirements.

It isn’t good for the finances and the players could potentially have a negative influence on the rest of the squad.

Arsene Wenger will be hoping that Watford do make a move for Gibbs, as there is no longer a place for him at the club and they would benefit from the funds that a sale would provide.
