Arsenal round-up: Lyon president on Lacazette future; Lemar transfer close; Milan target defender

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas is not a shy character and he has spoken out on the future of Alexandre Lacazette once again. In an interview with French news outlet Canal+, he discussed the striker and suggested that he may stay at the Ligue 1 side this summer, while he stated that the club does have an interest in Olivier Giroud. The following quotes were translated by Sky Sports:

“I do not think that Alexandre Lacazette will leave this summer.”

“I do not have anything to say about Olivier Giroud. We’re interested. Things haven’t advanced.”

This would be a blow for the Gunners if it was the case, but presidents of foreign clubs shouldn’t be fully trusted. They are trying to get the best deal for their club, therefore their comments need to be looked at cynically. Arsenal have a good chance of signing the striker if they are willing to put the money up for him. The fact that Lyon are interested in Giroud is a benefit as they could involve him in the deal to sign Lacazette.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail report that Arsenal are moving closer to a deal for Thomas Lemar and are confident that they will be able to complete a transfer to bring the midfielder to North London. He is valued at £30 million by current club Monaco, but talks have progressed well between the two clubs and the Gunners don’t expect any hitches in the discussions. Reports suggest the player is keen to join the club, despite the lack of Champions League football.

This would be a great transfer and one that shows Arsenal remain at the top table of European football, despite the club not being in next season’s Champions League. Lemar was one of the stars of the 2016/17 campaign as he was key to the success that Monaco enjoyed. He is an attacking midfielder, capable of playing on the left wing and centrally. Furthermore, he has a good eye for a pass and it is his intelligent movement that allows him to find space in the final third. During the Ligue 1 season, he contributed nine goals and ten assists as his team romped to the title.

Although their focus is on incomings, the loss of Champions League football means that the Gunners are at risk of losing key players. The Mirror report that AC Milan have joined the race for Laurent Koscielny and the Frenchman is a player that the club can’t afford to lose this summer, as it would leave them short at centre-back. He sees his future in North London, but Milan have been splashing the cash under their new owners and if they are serious about signing the 31-year-old, there is reason for Arsenal to become concerned.

It remains to be seen how serious the interest from Milan is, but Koscielny is a player that Arsenal should be able to keep at the club. He has enjoyed his time at the Emirates Stadium and he won’t be looking to move on, which puts the Gunners in a strong position to rebuff bids. Although it may be difficult to turn down if Milan put a lot of money on the table, it will be extremely difficult to replace him with a player of similar quality.
