Granit Xhaka was the club’s big summer signing last summer, but he hasn’t played as well as many anticipated. There have been reports in recent weeks linking him with a move to Bayern Munich. However, the Swiss international has dismissed the rumours and stated that the Gunners are on the same level as the German giants, despite their hammering in the Champions League. The following quotes are being reported in the Evening Standard.

“I have read that too. But I have not heard anything.”

“From my view they are [on the same level]… That’s how I feel. The defeats annoy me particularly because I have had good memories against Bayern. We were able to beat them three times with Gladbach. And I don’t think Gladbach are on the same level as Arsenal.”

Although this is a worrying comment for Arsenal fans in terms of one of their players believing that they are on the same level as Bayern Munich, it does highlight how positively the club is thought of within the game. Xhaka was clearly attracted to join the club due to their high standing and they remain able to convince good players to move to North London this summer. In terms of the Swiss midfielder, he is one they need to keep at the club as he has the potential to be a lot better next season, as he is slowly getting to grips with the league.

Alex Iwobi has managed to break into the first team squad over the last 18-months and there is an exciting future ahead of him. The Mail report quotes from the winger who remains fully behind Arsene Wenger. He has called for fans to show the Frenchman some respect.

“They need to have a bit more respect in my opinion. I mean, he’s been at the club for 20 years, he’s achieved a lot, obviously they’re a bit impatient with the results and where they want to finish.

“We also want to finish there, we want to win the league like anyone else, I can guarantee we are trying our hardest.”

These is another example of an Arsenal player saying the right things in the media, but that isn’t enough for supporters anymore. They want to see much more from their players and they need to start backing up their words with performances on the pitch. Iwobi is a young player and it is refreshing to see him make a statement of support for his manager. However, given that Wenger was the one that gave him his chance, he has to support him.

The Mirror report that Arsenal are ready to enter into competition with North London rivals Tottenham to sign Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka. The German has only a year left on his current deal and he is set for a transfer in the summer. This has alerted the Gunners, as they are looking to improve their midfield at the end of the season. Juventus are also believed to be watching the midfielder’s situation closely.

The 22-year-old is a box-to-box midfielder capable of scoring goals, in addition to winning the ball back. He is averaging 4.8 ball recoveries and 1.1 key passes per game. Arsenal need to improve their midfield as they have struggled to dominate matches at times. Goretka would improve the team out of possession and in the transition phase. The Schalke man has already represented Germany and has the potential to become a Champions League calibre player. Considering his contract situation, he is certainly one that Arsenal should be keeping an eye on.
