Arsenal still need to make a few additions before the start of the new season and major German news outlet Bild report that Leon Goretzka is attracting interest from the Gunners. Meanwhile, Manchester City are also in the running for his signature.

According to the report, Arsene Wenger has watched the midfielder closely and has been impressed by his performances for FC Schalke. Although the German club don’t want to sell him, there is growing interest in the player and a bidding war could ensue.

The Gunners need another central midfielder to add competition for places. They missed Santi Cazorla during the second half of the season and need more creativity from deep. Goretzka has proven himself as one of the most exciting midfield talents after some impressive performances for Germany in the Confederations Cup.

The 22-year-old is hard working and helps his side keep a good defensive shape, but he also offers a threat in possession. Last season, he scored five goals in the Bundesliga and the potential for growth is huge. He would be a good addition if the rumoured interest is acted upon.

Mohamed Elneny has rejected the opportunity to sign for Leicester City, because he enjoys life in London and wants to remain in the capital. The Sun report that Arsenal had accepted an offer of £10 million and allowed the midfielder to open discussions with the Foxes. However, the player is happy to stay at the Emirates Stadium, even if his playing time is limited, due to being settled in the City.

Elneny hasn’t managed to hold down a regular spot in the Gunners’ team and he is one of the players that could be sold on before September. There are better options to play in the centre of the park, but if he chooses to stay, he does offer good cover.

Nonetheless, the club have managed to complete one sale, as Wojciech Szczesny has moved to Juventus for an undisclosed fee. He has spent the last two seasons on loan at Roma and impressed during his time with the Giallorossi, which has led to interest being shown by Juventus.

The 27-year-old joined the Gunners in 2006 and had some good moments as the club’s number one, before being replaced by Petr Cech. He will initially be playing a supporting role to Gianluigi Buffon, but he is being lined up to be the Italian’s successor.

This is considered a risk by many, as the Poland international could develop into one of Europe’s best keepers at Juventus. However, there wasn’t a place for him at the Emirates Stadium as number one and for that reason, the money on offer was too good to turn down.

It brings in some more money for Arsene Wenger to spend and frees up a healthy portion of the wage budget. He may go on to become a great keeper, but at this time, it is the right move from the Gunners.
