Arsenal reportedly want Lyon star that was compared to Thierry Henry in 2017

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Lyon superstar Memphis Depay as the Netherlands international entered the final 12 months of his current deal – and a former teammate compared him to Thierry Henry in 2017.

Depay, 26, is still recovering from an ACL injury that saw his season curtailed in December. Though Lyon remain in the Coupe de la Ligue final and Champions League, Depay may have played his last Lyon game.

That is because Le10Sport claim Arsenal are interested in luring Depay back to the Premier League – after his initial stint at Manchester United saw him struggle. He scored just seven goals in 53 appearances.

The report states that Mikel Arteta is a big fan and he will look to sign the Lyon star if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette depart. In 2017, Depay was compared to Henry by teammate Christophe Jallet.

“I had him in front of me last March, when we played the Netherlands,” Jallet told RMC Sport, as per the Express. “He manages to put very good balls in front of the goal and can score by dribbling, like Thierry Henry.”

TBR’s view – Would Depay suit Arsenal style?

Exciting, attack-based and quick, Arsenal’s attack is beginning to rekindle that free-flowing, expressive nature you would expect from an Arsenal side. Arteta is combining a mix of youth and experience to find the balance.

But Lacazette is struggling to get into the team and since the restart, Aubameyang has struggled. The likes of Eddie Nketiah, Nicolas Pepe and most definitely Bukayo Saka are the leading attackers of Arsenal right now.

Adding Depay into the mix will replace the important experience of Aubameyang and Lacazette – but it will also provide the Gunners with a tenacious, versatile attacker that can take Arsenal back into the top four.
