Arsenal are reportedly one of the clubs in the mix to sign Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren this summer with the Croatian powerhouse’s contract expiring in 2021 – and Paul Merson is seemingly quite the fan of Lovren.
Lovren, 30, is being linked with an exit from Liverpool this summer after managing just 14 league and cup appearances in all competitions throughout 2019-20. He is out of contract at the end of next season.
The Gunners need centre-backs this summer. Shkodran Mustafi, David Luiz and Sokratis have all been under par in an Arsenal shirt, while Rob Holding and Calum Chambers have been forced to deal with long-term injuries.
Pablo Mari remains only on loan, and Arsenal could do a lot worse than bring Lovren to The Emirates. Indeed, Gunners legend Merson is a fan, once bigging Lovren up in his Daily Star column towards the end of 2018.
“Liverpool have problems at the back with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip both injured,” Merson wrote in The Daily Star. “But don’t expect Dejan Lovren to blow their title hopes. I think he’ll step up.
“He’s not short of confidence and he has bundles of belief. It’s not bad is it, if you can call on a World Cup finalist with a lorry load of caps to come in and fill the void. Don’t expect Liverpool to suddenly fall apart.”
If Merson’s quotes are anything to go by, Arsenal should not think twice about bringing Lovren to north London – with Merson summing Lovren up in a nutshell. Enormous experience, including a World Cup final, and a player with plenty of confidence.
That is what Arsenal need. Experience and confidence at centre-back. Lovren is also more of a no-nonsense centre-back and The Gunners require a bit of steel. As per Merson, Champions League winner Lovren would be a good signing for Arsenal.
