Arsenal have reportedly added Chelsea midfielder Jorginho to their summer shortlist as Mikel Arteta looks at alternatives to Atletico Madrid ace Thomas Partey – but Ian Wright’s past comments about the Italian will hardly fill fans with excitement.
Jorginho, 28, has become a crucial part of Chelsea’s side since joining the club for £50million (BBC) in the summer of 2018. The Blues beat Manchester City to his signature, and he has just clocked up his 100th Blues outing in the defeat to Liverpool.
The former Napoli man has become so important that he has even captained Chelsea in their first two Premier League games – but it was a tricky start for the west Londoners’ number five. He came under criticism, as he was compared to N’Golo Kante.
Sky Sports claim Jorginho, who has since rid himself of some questionable form and become an integral member of the Chelsea side, is a target for the Gunners. But Wright claimed in January 2019 that Jorginho was “very overrated”.
“I have to say before I go on to Arsenal and how we nullified Chelsea, for me very overrated [on Jorginho]” Wright told his official YouTube channel in 2019. “You can see that Ramsey was told to just be in and around him, to stop him playing.
“He can’t get away from anyone, he is not very dynamic, he hasn’t got any skills. When you consider that somebody has got 2000 passes in the league and no assist, you’re thinking, what’s going on?”
TBR’s view – Is Jorginho the man Arsenal need?
Though he came in for criticism, even from Arsenal legend Wright, Jorginho has what it takes to throw Arsenal back into contention for Champions League qualification. Arteta needs a tenacious midfielder and Jorginho would be ideal.
But the chances of Chelsea allowing Arsenal to sign Jorginho has got to be close to zero. The Italian is a mainstay of the starting eleven and with the Blues already making lots of signings, they will hardly want to replace a crucial member of the team.
