Arsenal reportedly want 29-year-old that says he has always been 'fond' of Gunners, because of Henry
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing midfielder William Carvalho from Betis – a player that once declared his love for the Gunners in 2015.
Carvalho, 29, has constantly been linked with a move to the Premier League. However, leaving Sporting Lisbon in 2018, he moved to Spain.
He joined Real Betis for a fee of £17million (Marca), and has since clocked up 95 appearances. But this season, he has dropped out of the line-up.
The Euro 2016 winner has only started five of his side’s 10 league games – coming on as a sub in three others. Now, he could be tempted to leave.
A report from CalcioMercato says Arsenal are trying to sign Carvalho ahead of the January window. Carvalho has entered the last 18 months of his deal.
Back in 2015, Carvalho spoke about previous interest from Arsenal – suggesting he could be tempted by the Gunners, because of Thierry Henry.
“I prefer not to say too much, but there is a club with which I’ve always been fond of: Arsenal. Because of Thierry Henry,” Carvalho said, in 2015.
“A player with whom I have always enjoyed watching. Maybe this is why I look with so much affection to the Premier League.”
Carvalho to Arsenal: Elneny and Maitland-Niles to leave?
Arsenal have a glut of central midfielders. Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi remain on the books, but are likely to leave permanently.
However, they are not alone. The first-choice options are Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka and Albert Lokonga. Mo Elneny is in reserve.
The Egyptian is out of contract next summer and January represents Arsenal’s last chance to bring in some cash for his signature.
Meanwhile, Ainsley Maitland-Niles does not want to play in defence – but he is not good enough in midfield. He could also leave, if Carvalho joins.
