Arsenal have returned to the race to sign Sporting youngster Joelson Fernandes, and Portuguese outlet A Bola have claimed that the Gunners have had a £18 million bid for the 17-year-old rejected.

Joelson has been linked with a potential switch to the Emirates for some time. The Daily Mail reported towards the end of last month however, that Arsenal had backed away from a potential move for the teenager.

The Mail suggested that representatives from Arsenal had been expected to fly out to try and tie up a potential deal for Joelson. However, it appeared that they had cooled their interest.

But it appears that there may still be further twists to come.

Portuguese publication A Bola has claimed that Arsenal have made a €20 million (£17.98 million) bid for the forward.

It is suggested that Sporting swiftly rejected the offer. They are reportedly determined to not sell Joelson for anything less than £40.4 million which would trigger his release clause.

Arsenal however, remain hopeful that they may not need to activate his release clause to land Joelson due to Sporting’s uncertain financial situation, according to A Bola.

TBR View: Arsenal fans may not get carried away by fresh links just yet

It will be interesting to see what most Arsenal fans make of the fresh links. Having already reportedly pulled the plug on their interest previously, some supporters may be reluctant to get carried away by the latest reports.

There also looks to be a significant gap between the two clubs’ valuations. So even if Arsenal are back in, there looks to be a long way to go before an agreement is reached.

But it is probably fair to say that the supporters have not heard the last of Arsenal’s links with Joelson this summer.
