Arsenal may just have received a boost in the shape of one of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s reported suitors seemingly edging closer to signing a different forward.
The Gabon international is arguably Arsenal’s most important player, having scored 20 goals in all competitions this season and taking over the Gunners team captaincy.
Since his £56million move to the Emirates Stadium in January 2018, Aubameyang has registered 61 goals and 13 assists for Arsenal in all competitions.
The 30-year-old’s future at Arsenal is uncertain, given his contract expires next summer, and if he doesn’t pen new terms, the Gunners will have to decide whether to cash in on him or let his contract run down.
Just a few days ago, Paris Saint-Germain were said to be in serious discussions over Aubameyang, with Spanish outlet Todofichajes claiming “figures close to €38million” (around £34million) were being floated by the two clubs.
However, ESPN has now claimed that PSG are pushing on with securing Mauro Icardi’s services permanently from inter Milan.
The outlet says talks between the two clubs have intensified while Wanda Nara, the player’s wife and agent, has been busy finalising a deal with PSG whilst putting pressure on the Nerazzurri to lower the fee.
With Aubameyang’s contract expiring next summer, Arsenal are between a rock and a hard place regarding their talisman – as much as they don’t want to let him go, this summer would be their last chance to recoup anything reasonable for his services.
That said, if PSG manage to sign Icardi permanently, surely they wouldn’t need Aubameyang as well, considering they already have Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani in their ranks?
Potentially a boost for Arsenal in the form of a reprieve for the Gunners man and a wealthy suitor out of the running, then it remains to be seen if the North Londoners can follow it up with further discussions and maybe a potential new deal.
