Arsenal have reportedly turned down the chance to sign Mitchel Bergkamp, after he failed to impress on trial.

The 22-year-old has been let go after spending some time with the club’s U23s, who are managed by Steve Bould.

Bergkamp, who is the son of legendary Dutchman and Gunners Invincible Dennis, remains a free agent, as reported Goal, after being released by Almere City in the summer.

Some supporters had been hoping for Mitchel to seize his chance in the hope of him perhaps following in his dad’s footsteps.

Bergkamp snr, of course, was an unbelievable player in his day and is widely considered one of the Gunners’ greatest ever players.

In the eyes of some purists he is Arsenal’s best, with his technical quality bettered by very few players to have ever played in the Premier League.

But it seems as though his legacy will not be continued through Mitchel, who accompanied Dennis for his testimonial in the Emirates Stadium’s first-ever game.

TBR’s View – Arsenal may never find another Dennis Bergkamp

So Bergkamp jr won’t be taking over his father’s mantle in north London, which will come as a slight disappointment to some who were sucked in by the romanticism of the youngster’s trial.

In truth though, it’s unlikely Bergkamp snr will ever be emulated by anybody.

The star played with such grace and intelligence that many players today can only dream of, and Gunners fans may just have to accept that he was a one-off.
