Arsenal are reportedly closing in on a move to bring Real Madrid playmaker Martin Odegaard to The Emirates on loan until the summer – and Cristiano Ronaldo’s verdict from 2015 on the Norwegian starlet will have Gunners fans excited.
Odegaard, 22, is allowed to leave Real this month after featuring for just five minutes in the league since November. He has remained an unused substitute under Zinedine Zidane in four of the last five La Liga matches.
Spanish website El Confidencial claimed overnight that Odegaard has chosen to join Arsenal on loan until the end of the season. The 25-time Norway international will join on a dry loan, with no permanent deal included.
There had been interest from Real Sociedad, the team he played for last season, but he has chosen to try something new – as per reports. Back in 2015, Ronaldo told BT Sport – as per The Mirror – that Odegaard is destined for greatness.
“You see many players with potential. I will mention Martin Odegaard of Madrid for example, at 16 he’s still young but you can see he’s a very good player,” Ronaldo said. “He’s a great player, I think he’s a young boy, he can still grow.
“He has a good future ahead. We must give him time to learn, to take his best decisions. But I see a lot of potential in the player, he has got a good left foot,” Ronaldo continued, pinpointing his left-foot as a particularly exciting trait.
TBR’s view – Odegaard can take Arsenal into top four
While Emile Smith-Rowe is making Arsenal tick at the moment, bringing in some much-needed number 10 competition will only help the English starlet and the Gunners. With Europa League to return soon, Arsenal need depth.
Giving themselves every chance of competing on all fronts is key, but with Odegaard they are also adding a player that improves upon Smith-Rowe – and boost their chances of finishing in the top four. He is a proper player and only improves The Gunners.
