Report: Arsenal step up bid to sign England star who left Patrick Vieira stunned at Euro 2020
Arsenal are the latest club to have registered an interest in signing Leeds United midfielder, Kalvin Phillips, according to reports today.
90Min has claimed that Phillips has admirers at a number of clubs in the Premier League. Manchester United, Aston Villa and Newcastle are all names that have been mentioned before. However, the mention of Arsenal is a new name when it comes to the England man.
Phillips has missed large chunks of the season this term with injury. However, he is on his way back to full fitness now and will be key for Leeds in the run-in. His absence is largely attributed to Leeds’ dip in results which ultimately led to Marcelo Bielsa losing his job.
But while Arsenal might be keen on Phillips, the same 90Min report suggests that Phillips and teammate Raphinha are both impressed by Jesse Marsch. That could bode well for the club, with Marsch’s impact bound to have a bearing on if the duo stay put.
TBR’s View: Phillips At Arsenal Would Be Brilliant
You wouldn’t put it past Arsenal to just pull this one out of the bag. They did it last summer with the likes of Ben White and Aaron Ramsdale.
The Gunners do need another central midfielder and with Granit Xhaka once again being spoken about in terms of leaving, Phillips would be a sound addition. You get the feeling – without being disrespectful to Leeds – that Phillips would flourish and do even better at a team pushing for the top four places. Of course, he’ll cost a big fee, but he instantly improves the Gunners midfield.
And if Arsenal fans wanted an endorsement, then they only need to look at how impressed Patrick Vieira was with Phillips for his Euro 2020 efforts.
