Chelsea’s incoming manager Antonio Conte has earmarked Roma’s duo Radja Nainggolan and Kostas Manolas at the head of a long list of transfer targets. While the report, written by the Evening Standard, named seven players who are currently attracting the interest of the Stamford Bridge outfit, including Everton’s Romelu Lukaku, Juvenuts’ Paul Pogba and Leonardo Bonucci, Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain and Paris Saint Germain’s Edinson Cavani, the Roma duo are considered as the most attainable in the upcoming transfer window.
Are they needed at Stamford Bridge?
Radja Nainggolan is a complete power-house in central midfield, and yet he possesses a certain finesse when in possession of the ball. His arrival would go a long way to restoring a level of dynamism and security to the Chelsea spine, features they have lacked as Nemanja Matic has gone missing this term. With the attacking talent already available to the Blues, they are desperate for a player capable of recycling possession – winning back the ball, before accurately distributing it further up a field. Nainggolan is one of the best in the business when it comes to this.
With many expecting Conte to experiment with a three-man defensive line, he will also be eager to strengthen his options at centre-back. Kostas Manolas has impressed throughout his time at the Stadio Olimpico, becoming a regular in Rudi Garcia’s talented side. While his arrival at Stamford Bridge has become less likely following John Terry’s recent contract extension, Manolas could be seen as the man to gradually phase out the Chelsea captain as he adjusts to life in the English top flight.
