Arsenal have had a major breakthrough in the transfer market and have come to an agreement in principle to sign one of their top targets.

Arsenal have been tracking new signings all summer and it now looks like they are close to adding a second signing on top of Riccardo Calafiori.

A new midfielder has been top of the agenda for Arsenal and after missing out on Martin Zubimendi – a player who has also rejected Liverpool – it now looks like a breakthrough has been made.

Arsenal reach agreement in principle for Mikel Merino

According to a report from Estadio Deportivo which relays comments from the Spanish media, Arsenal have reached an agreement in principle to sign Mikel Merino.

The deal is believed to be worth around £30m and things are now expected to advance.

Arsenal have been looking for a new number six for a while with the idea that Declan Rice can do a job further forward under Mikel Arteta.

Edu is believed to have flown to Spain to hold talks with Merino and his camp to push the deal on.

Lauded for having ‘incredible‘ technique during the Euros, Merino has emerged as the man Arsenal want to sign for the middle of the park.

Merino can take Arsenal to another level

If the idea is to bring Declan Rice out of that deeper role and move him further forward, then the signing of Mikel Merino will be ideal.

Merino will sit deeper and bring an element of class to the Arsenal midfield that he showed in the Euros with Spain.

Arsenal, of course, don’t have far to go in terms of really getting to grips with Man City and Merino does help them.

However, you do feel Arsenal might need another attacking player to really make a difference and with two weeks of the window to go, a new forward could also be on the agenda.
