At one point towards the end of the transfer window, it looked as though Arsenal were going to swoop for Chelsea midfielder Jorginho.
ESPN claimed at the start of October that Mikel Arteta was actually ‘desperate’ to get the Brazilian-born Italian maestro into his squad before the international transfer deadline.
The Gunners had failed to land Houssem Aouar from Lyon and were seemingly looking at alternatives.

In the end, Thomas Partey was signed, but the Ghanaian was a player Arsenal had been chasing all summer.
It seemed Jorginho – who cost Chelsea a reported £57 million (Sky Sports) – was wanted in addition, but a move did not come to fruition.
If Arteta was disappointed not to get Jorginho, he certainly need not feel that way now.
For Mohamed Elneny has emerged from the shadows to become a key member of the squad, having spent last term on loan at Besiktas.
The Egyptian is enjoying a new lease of life at the Emirates, and has really impressed so far in 2020/21 – his performance against Manchester United last weekend being a particular highlight.
TBR’s View – Elneny form just the ticket after Jorginho non-move
Jorginho would perhaps have been a nice addition for Arsenal, but few, if any, are thinking about the 28-year-old and what might have been now.

Between Elneny and Partey, Arsenal’s midfield is looking in good shape.
Interestingly, WhoScored statistics actually indicate Elneny has been more accurate with his passes than Jorginho so far.
The £50,000-a-week star (Spotrac) has averaged 60.8 passes per game in the Premier League at 93.8%, while Jorginho has averaged 48 per game at 85.7%.
It looks as though Elneny has become the pass-master Arteta was seemingly craving.
