Report: Arsenal interested in signing 'top-class' midfielder, 12 months after initially making a bid

Arsenal are said to be once again interested in signing Real Betis midfielder, Guido Rodriguez, according to reports from Spain over the weekend.

Marca has reported how Betis could be forced into a sale to balance their books a bit and with that, Guido Rodriguez is the star name they could bring a big fee in for. In the report, Arsenal are mentioned as holding an interest in the Argentinian battler.

Of course, Arsenal’s interest in Guido is nothing brand new. It was around 12 months to the day that we reported on TBR how the Gunners had made a bid for the midfielder. Nothing came of that interest last year in the end, and since then, Arsenal have made other moves. Most recently, a deal to bring Fabio Vieira to the club was agreed.

However, the Gunners are thought to still want more this window. And if the right players are available, it’s believed Mikel Arteta will get the backing of the Kroenke’s. Rodriguez could well be another option they look to in midfield, with Kevin Campbell last year suggesting the ‘brilliant’ Betis man would be ‘top class’ for Arsenal.

TBR’s View: Do Arsenal Really Need Guido Rodriguez?

12 months ago, this seemed like a no-brainer. However, a year on and with Vieira signed, there has to be questions over whether this is a deal Arsenal pursue.

Of course, Guido is a fine player in his own right. He’s been the star of the show for Betis and you don’t play for Argentina without having something about you. Arsenal, too, have a Europa League campaign to contend with this year and having a bigger squad might be vital.

However, it doesn’t appear to be a priority position for Arsenal, this. With that, signing Guido Rodriguez is probably more of a last resort.
