Arsenal have officially left both Mesut Ozil and Sokratis out of their Premier League squad for the 2020-21 season. The duo will surely leave the club.
The Premier League squad lists are out and Arsenal’s is arguably the most notable of the lot. The Gunners have not included either Mesut Ozil or Sokratis in their 25.
It means that the two cannot play in the Premier League until at least February when teams can make changes. The chances of Arsenal adding them then seem slim, however.
The Gunners also left them out of their Europa League squads. That leaves the FA Cup and League Cup are the only competitions they can play in. That, however, also seems quite unlikely.
Sokratis, who joined the club in 2018 for £17m, has played 44 Premier League games over the last two seasons. He featured as a late substitute in the FA Cup final last season as Arsenal won the trophy.
Ozil is the big story here, though. The German was Arsenal’s club-record signing in 2013 when he joined for £42m. He’s become a key player in that time, too, but slipped out of the team over the last two years. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, this is surely the end of him at Arsenal.
This had been rumoured, especially after both failed to make the cut for the Europa League. But it’s still quite a shock to see now it’s official.
Ozil, in particular, has been a big part of Arsenal for seven years. For him to not even make the squad list is quite extraordinary. Arsenal will now head into the season deliberately not using a player with over 250 games for them.
You’d imagine both will be gone at the end of the season. But for the good of their careers, it may be as soon as January.
