Arsenal want to sign central midfielder Sandro Tonali from Italian Serie A champions AC Milan.

Journalist Enrico Camelio has stated that the Gunners want Tonali and have even held talks over a potential transfer.

He told CalcioMercato.it: “Milan and Arsenal met and talked about Tonali.

“The Rossoneri have declared that the midfielder is not transferable, but if a proposal for €55 million (£46.4m) arrives, Milan could sell him and make two purchases”.

And if Gunners fans want to know what to expect from their potential new arrival, Italian legend Francesco Totti has good news for them.

Two years ago, he lavished praise on the 22-year-old, saying: “He will become one of the top central players in the world. Like Gerrard, De Rossi or Lampard.

“He is a mixture of Pirlo and Gattuso. He has everything a player can have.

“Incredible change of pace, he’s technically good and head-wise, he’s always calm. Both in important games and in easy games.”

Arsenal have been looking at getting a new central midfielder throughout the summer, with links to Youri Tielemans refusing to go away.

Tonali is a more deep-lying player than that, as the comparison with Pirlo and Gattuso indicates, and new-boy Oleksandr Zinchenko can also play there when he is not filling in at left-back.

But Arsenal have been trying to sign young players with a good future ahead of them under Mikel Arteta and Tonali certainly looks to fit the bill.
