Arsenal now in talks to buy £34m forward who Arsene Wenger actually tried to sign 11 years ago

It’s no secret that Arsenal will be attempting to improve the attacking options available to Mikel Arteta this summer.

Andrea Berta is predominantly chasing a striker for Arsenal this summer but the club’s new sporting director has also recognised the need to sign a new left winger, too.

Arsenal already planned to add a winger but Berta has made it another priority – the Italian feels as if the Gunners need another right-footed option on the left, an upgrade on Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli if you will.

And whilst Arsenal have held talks with Nico Williams at Athletic Bilbao, there’s no guarantee that the Spaniard will head to England this summer.

Therefore, Arsenal are interested in Kingsley Coman and have now reportedly taken their intrigue one step further.

Arsenal are in ongoing talks to sign Kingsley Coman

According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, Arsenal have now made contact with Coman’s camp over a potential move this summer.

The journalist claimed that there was ‘ongoing communication’ between both Arsenal and Coman, who are interested in the 28-year-old France international.

Sharing his update on X, Plettenberg wrote: “There is contact between Arsenal and Kingsley Coman’s management, with both sides in ongoing communication.

“Arsenal are aware that Saudi Arabia is a very appealing option for Coman, but they have expressed their interest.

“Coman and Bayern are expected to part ways in the summer. The situation is positive, with open dialogue between all parties. Coman will be replaced.”

According to the same journalist, Bayern Munich would demand around €40m (£34m) for Coman this summer, a fairly reasonable price given that the winger isn’t indispensable to Vincent Kompany’s project.

Arsene Wenger tried to sign Kingsley Coman

All that being said, Arsene Wenger actually tried to sign Coman for Arsenal back in 2014, a name that is probably already very familiar with a lot of fans in N5.

Coman left Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer to join Juventus 11 years ago, and Wenger actually wanted to take his compatriot to Arsenal.

Speaking in 2015, a year after those attempts, Wenger said: “Yes we really tried to sign Kingsley Coman in the summer of 2014. The transfer was almost completed, but he preferred Juventus.”

Now, over 10 years later, Arsenal might finally get their man, a winger who has now won eight Bundesliga titles.

Whether Coman would actually prevail as an upgrade on someone like Martinelli remains to be seen, but it seems as if the interest is there.
