Arsenal have received another blow in their bid to replace Sven Mislintat, with Marc Overmars extending his stay as director of football at Ajax (official website).

The Dutchman, who represented the Gunners for three seasons between 1997-2000, put pen to paper on a new five-year deal with the Amsterdam club on Monday.

The 45-year-old stated that there were ‘still plenty of challenges’ at the club as a reason for extending.

Arsenal had identified Overmars as a potential candidate following their failure to land Monchi, who has rejoined Sevilla (official website). football.london had reported Overmars was initially keen.

The double blow leaves Arsenal in a difficult position, with the end of the season and summer transfer window fast approaching.

Monchi and Overmars snubs could cost Arsenal dearly this summer

The failure to land either Monchi or Overmars could really harm the club this summer in terms of transfers.

Monchi is a supposed ‘transfer expert’, and Arsenal missing out on him is Sevilla’s gain.

During his first stint with the Andalusian club he signed the likes of Dani Alves, Ever Banega, Carlos Bacca, Ivan Rakitic and Clement Lenglet just to name a few.

The expertise he could have brought may cost Arsenal quality players this summer, and allow their Premier League rivals to leave them trailing in their wake. He has also previously worked with Unai Emery and knows the Spaniard well

Overmars has done a stellar job at Ajax since joining the club in 2012, posting a £220 million profit in the transfer market (via The Mirror).

Either would have been a great addition, but Arsenal missing out on both outstanding candidates could see them face difficulty closing deals this summer.
