Arsenal missed out on a bargain in 2015 with Joe Gomez rejection

The England international turned down Arsenal for Liverpool in 2015, according to reports.

Joe Gomez has been an absolute revelation for Liverpool this season. It appears his injury worries are behind him and he has, perhaps, been Jurgen Klopp’s standout performer this season.

Considering he partners £75 million Virgil van Dijk and cost a reported £3.5 million Liverpool undoubtedly picked up a bargain buy.

It must be a sickener for Arsenal. Liverpool were far from the only team chasing Gomez in 2015. The talented defender had caught the eye with his performances for Charlton Athletic.

“It’s a dream come true…Here was somewhere I wanted to go and get better and learn, and play good football. It was an easy decision.”

Arsenal would have no doubt felt they had the edge. As reported by The Mirror in April 2015, Arsenal were the frontrunners for the player. Gomez was a boyhood Arsenal fan and being the only London club keen on his signature the destination seemed favourable. The report also claimed that Arsenal had a strong relationship with the Addicks and it seemed Gomez would be an Arsenal player.

Then he moved to Liverpool, with talkSPORT suggesting Arsenal had been beaten for his signature.

Now, he is fast becoming England’s best young defender and Arsenal will no doubt wish they had managed to convince him into an Emirates switch in 2015.
