Arsenal missed a trick by not signing Martin Hinteregger – TBR View

In November 2019, The Sun reported that Arsenal and West Ham were ready to do battle to sign Eintracht Frankfurt defender Martin Hinteregger.

A year down the line and the decision not to sign the Austrian enforcer looks like a foolish decision, particularly for Arsenal.

The 28-year-old has played all seven of his team’s Bundesliga games, showcasing his undeniable talent in the process.

Prior to the international break, the experienced performer was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Week by Who Scored.

He helped his team to a 2-2 draw against VfB Stuttgart with a solid display of old-fashioned defending.

He has a pass success ratio of 88% for the season and has won no fewer than 31 headers this season.

Hinteregger has won 36 tackles during 2020/21 and 31 clearances.

Arsenal and West Ham were quoted £22 million for the defender and given his start to the current campaign that looks a steal.

The Gunners did land Gabriel in the summer and he is already proving a decent addition to Mikel Arteta’s ranks.

It’s fair to say, there are still defensive concerns at Arsenal though.

David Luiz is often erratic, Shkodran Mustafi is out of the picture and Rob Holding is yet to prove his consistency.

Hinteregger might have proved a decent addition in the summer and is capable of playing in a two or a three.

The man with 50 caps for his country would have been a safe addition and one who could have thrived alongside Gabriel.

It’s unlikely Frankfurt will settle for £22 million for Hinteregger any longer, with his value set to soar.

Arsenal might have missed a trick over the Austrian.
