Mikel Arteta secured his first win as Arsenal boss as the Gunners defeated Manchester United 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

First-half goals from Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis ensured a memorable night for Arsenal and Arteta.

The Spaniard had overseen a cruel loss to Chelsea on Sunday. Despite leading for large parts of the game they were sucker-punched by two goals in the last seven minutes.

Arsenal climbed up to tenth with the win and Arteta will hope his side can start looking up.

Following the game, the new boss took to Twitter to revel in the victory and demand focus on future endeavours:

As a player Arteta played 150 games for the Gunners, scoring 16 goals for the club.

He was a respected figure and proved a popular appointment to replace Unai Emery when he departed in November.

With it being Arteta’s first foray into management, supporters will need to remain patient, however.

Manchester United arrived at the Emirates in decent form so beating them will do wonders for the confidence of his team.

With the transfer window now open, Arteta might look to dip his toe.

Having spent heavily in the summer, however, it does seem unlikely that wholesale changes will be made to the squad.

Arsenal supporters will enjoy this victory before turning attentions to an FA Cup meeting with Leeds.

Arteta won the domestic trophy twice during his time as a player and he will surely hope to go on a good cup run this season.

The win over United is a monkey off the boss’ back and kicking on must now become a priority for the Gunners.
