Mesut Ozil has admitted that he is sick for being singled out for Arsenal’s failings after coming under fire in recent weeks. His future at Arsenal is in doubt as he enters the last 18-months of his contract. The German insists that the criticism will make him stronger and Arsenal fans will be hoping that he can find the form that he showed last season.
“If I have one bad game after ten good ones, there is immediate criticism.”
“I have been in the business for many years. If I believed and accepted everything written about me I would be crazy.”
The midfielder is correct in his assessments. There is a lot of criticism that comes his way after a bad performance and he is one of the first to be singled out. The fact that he has realised this should worry Arsenal fans as it could play a part in his decision to not renew his current contract. Ozil is a one of a kind and his style of play is marvelled at across the world. He isn’t properly appreciated by the English press and I wouldn’t blame him if he does seek a move to back to Spain or Germany.
On the transfer front, there has been little talk of incomings, but there are a few players that don’t appear to have a future at the club. The Metro report that Pep Guardiola has asked to be kept informed of Jack Wilshere’s future. City could be set to make a move and bring another player from North London to Manchester. The midfielder is currently out on loan and his long term future is unclear. There was no room for him at Arsenal in the summer, but he has proven his fitness and played well for Bournemouth since moving to the South Coast. Everton are also believed to be interested.
It would be a disappointment if Wilshere left North London to join one of the club’s biggest rivals and it would damage Arsene Wenger’s reputation if he became a star elsewhere, as the Frenchman has failed to get the best out of the midfielder on a consistent basis. For Wilshere, a move to work under Pep Guardiola would certainly appeal. He suits the Spaniard’s style and he would get the opportunity to work with one of the greatest coaches in the game. It would be a great opportunity for him to develop as a player.
Another player that is doesn’t appear to have a future at Arsenal is Gedion Zelalem. The 19-year-old is highly thought of, but he has struggled to break into the first team at the Emirates Stadium. The Mirror report that Borussia Dortmund are closing in on a deal and that could potentially leave egg on Arsenal’s faces if he becomes a success there. A move to Germany will mean Arsenal only receive training compensation, which has yet to be agreed. This has left the possibility of a loan move with a view to a permanent switch being the original agreement between the two clubs.
Although there are more important players to keep at Arsenal, it is concerning for supporters that one of their brighter talents is being snapped up by a rival club. If he was leaving for a mid-table Premier League club, there would be less concern, but if a club like Dortmund sees something in him, it begs the question why are Arsenal letting him go? Serge Gnabry has already left the club and proven himself in the Bundesliga and now Zelalem could achieve something similar.
