Arsenal could be finally nearing an end to the saga surrounding Mesut Ozil. Turkish publication Fotomac reports that Fenerbahce are close to completing a loan swoop for the German.

For the last few transfer windows speculation over the future of Ozil has been rife. Were it not for his excessive £350,000-a-week wage (Spotrac), it’s fair to say the 29-year-old might have left the Gunners a while ago.

It is thought that a few formalities are to be ironed out but then Ozil will link up with the Turkish giants who sit fifth in the Turkish Super Lig.

The 31-year-old has been at Arsenal since 2013. In 242 games he has scored 43 goals and registered 76 assists.

He started this season down the pecking order, however, and has constantly divided opinion among the supporters.

During the current campaign, he has claimed just two assists from his 11 outings.

After his substitution against Manchester City last weekend he petulantly kicked his gloves away, causing a bit of stir with the supporters once more.

Selling Ozil would have perhaps been a preferred option. Nonetheless, finally shifting the misfiring 92-cap international does appear like something of a milestone.

TBR Verdict – Departure could allow Arsenal to strengthen

Okay, so loaning him out doesn’t mean the Gunners will recoup a great deal from his temporary stint away from the club.

It seems likely that given his status, however, a loan fee and a percentage of his wages will be paid by the Turkish giants.

Big money was spent by the Gunners in the summer and whoever the manager is in January won’t have a large bounty with which to attract players.

Ozil leaving could at least allow for some manoeuvring with the squad and that could be a massive plus for the squad currently shy on confidence.
