Arsenal must offload 30-year-old after abysmal Europa League display

Mesut Ozil wasn’t at his best in last night’s defeat to Chelsea.

Arsenal ended their 2018/19 campaign with a miserable showing against Chelsea in the Europa League Final.

The Gunners travelled to Baku in confident spirits but were battered 4-1 with every goal coming during a truly woeful second period.

It leaves boss Unai Emery with lots of work to do heading into the summer. His transfer budget will now be significantly lower than it would have been had they qualified for the Champions League.

Additional funds will now need to be raised from player sales and after last night’s showing, there might be a few players fearing for their future at the Emirates.

One of those is the enigma that is Mesut Ozil.

The German is quickly running out of chances to impress both his manager and the supporters at Arsenal. Just when it looks as though his performances might be turning a corner, he throws in a showing as thoroughly abysmal as the one last night.

The 30-year-old is comfortably Arsenal’s highest earner and it is time he started to prove it.

Back in January the Express reported that Ozil wouldn’t be going anywhere this summer, but after his horror-show against Chelsea, there would be no surprise to see Emery change tact on that one.

Ozil was substituted for Joe Willock during the second half of last night’s final. The youngster truly upstaged the World Cup winner and offered the Gunners faithful a glimpse of the future.

If Arsenal can find a potential suitor for Ozil this summer, they need to snap their hands off. The ex-Real Madrid man looks disinterested and appears to turn up once every so often at the moment.

The Gunners either need to turn towards youth or sign a player hungry to put Arsenal Football Club back among the Premier League’s elite teams.
