Former Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen has branded Arsenal attacker Mesut Ozil ‘shocking’ after his display in the Europa League Final.
The Gunners were thrashed 4-1 by the Blues in Baku and Gudjohnson, working as a BT Sport pundit didn’t hold back.
Ozil was substituted for youngster Joe Willock in the second half, sparking the first real spell of pressure on an otherwise woeful night for Unai Emery’s men.
Gudjohnsen scored 78 goals in 263 appearances during his time at Stamford Bridge and he didn’t hold back on Ozil:
He said during the coverage on BT Sport: “Ozil just walks around expecting a standing ovation.
“After that performance in a European final, I’d walk off in embarrassment if that was me. Shocking.”
Ozil has struggled for consistency during his time at the Emirates and this season he has struggled for game time under Emery.
Ozil is comfortably Arsenal’s highest earner and he quite simply needs to take a long, hard look at himself.
His form has been pathetic on occasions this season, with last night the tip of the iceberg.
The Gunners fans are right to be disgruntled. More often than not, Ozil looks disinterested and that simply isn’t good enough.
In fairness to the German, he wasn’t the only poor performer last night. Several members of the team were poor but the 30-year-old was particularly below par.
Arsenal are lacking leaders and that looks like an area for Emery to address during the summer.
