Arsenal may quickly rue not signing Yves Bissouma in transfer window
Despite being one of the busier sides in the transfer window it is debatable whether Arsenal enjoyed a good summer or not.
In fairness to the Gunners, they have signed a lot of players with a lot of potential. Ben White, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Martin Odegaard could be stalwarts for years to come.
But no-one at the peak of their powers was signed. And offloading players proved to be a real problem for Edu.
And perhaps no player better epitomises the issues Arsenal endured than Granit Xhaka.
For much of the window, it appeared that Xhaka would be joining Roma. Personal terms were reportedly agreed.
However, after failing to agree a fee with the Giallorossi, Arsenal handed the Swiss a new contract. And he has gone on to captain Arteta’s side this season.
Xhaka is now set for a suspension after a rash challenge against Manchester City. And fans must be wondering why the Gunners did not just reach a compromise with Roma and get a deal done.
Xhaka leaving would have freed up a spot in Arsenal’s midfield that would have almost certainly needed filling.
And it is likely that many Gunners fans would suggest the same name if asked which midfielder they wanted signed during the window.
Yves Bissouma is the player Arsenal needed in the transfer window
Unlike Xhaka, Yves Bissouma has started the season superbly. He has been outstanding for Brighton.
And it could have all been so different.
Football London reported in June that Arsenal had a longstanding interest in the Mali international. And Bissouma had apparently instructed his agent that he wanted to move to the Emirates.
Of course, Bissouma would have cost a lot more than what they would have made from selling Xhaka. But Arsenal showed that they were willing to spend this summer.
Sambi has arguably been the Gunners’ best player so far this term. And fans will be clinging to the prospect of him being paired with Thomas Partey.
But signing Bissouma to add to those two would have been a masterstroke.
The frustrating thing is Arsenal fans have felt that for some time.
