Lucas Torreira could be the biggest beneficiary of Mikel Arteta arriving at Arsenal

Arsenal could be close to appointing Mikel Arteta as the club’s new manager. The Spaniard is thought to be close to leaving Manchester City where he is assistant and taking his first managerial role.

If the deal does happen it will probably be met with some intrigue. Supporters might have wanted the experience of say Carlo Ancelotti; especially given the club’s current perilous predicament.

The talk will naturally turn towards which players could earn a new lease of life under the new incumbent. It’s fair to say lots of Arsenal players need to buck their ideas up and Arteta will have a tough job on his hands.

One man who could benefit from the presence of a former midfielder is Lucas Torreira.

The Uruguayan arrived at the Emirates in 2018 on the back of an impressive 2018 World Cup.

Things haven’t gone according to plan, however, with the 23-year-old struggling to settle into the Premier League.

Arteta himself was a central midfielder and perhaps he is the perfect manager to get Torreira firing on all cylinders.

The former Arsenal maestro was adored by the club’s supporters and so far the ex-Sampdoria man hasn’t felt that love from the fanbase.

There is enough to suggest that the midfielder can be a decent player and Arsenal shouldn’t wash their hands of him yet.

Paid £75,000-a-week (Spotrac) by the Gunners, Arteta could be the ideal mentor for the underperforming star.

Torreira has badly lost his way at the Emirates but the incoming manager might be just the catalyst towards him kick-starting his Arsenal career.
