Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of Arsenal being linked with wonderkid Gabriel Martinelli and it’s fair to say the Gunners look to have hit the jackpot.
On March 30th 2019, Yahoo in Brazil claimed that the Gunners had struck a verbal agreement to sign the talented forward.
Some cynics might have viewed this as being a move that was all too typical of Arsenal; great for the future but what about the here and now?
Well, the future looks even brighter given the potential that Martinelli has shown during the early stages of his Gunners career.
The Brazilian signed for Arsenal in July costing the club £6 million from Ituano (The Telegraph).
It was unsure from the outset what role he would play during his maiden campaign in the Premier League.
He netted twice in Carabao Cup games against Nottingham Forest and Liverpool and the early signs were good.
In total, he has scored 10 times and registered four assists, which for a teenager still finding his feet in a new country is pretty good.
Arsenal have signed lots of youngsters in the past who haven’t looked remotely capable of ever having an impact at first-team level. Yaya Sanogo, anyone?
Martinelli looks special though and one year on from his name first being linked with the Gunners, they look to have got this one absolutely spot on.
The Brazilian, of course, has lots of learning to do but under Mikel Arteta, he will only go from strength to strength.
