Arsenal loanee Nuno Tavares wins POTM award at Marseille

Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares joined Olympique Marseille on loan this summer, and he has just won the club’s Player of the Month award.

The talented Portuguese full-back, branded as ‘exceptional’, joined Arsenal for £6.8 million last year (Guardian). However, just 12 months later, he became surplus to requirements and was loaned out to Marseille, where he has become a star now.

Arsenal loanee Nuno Tavares wins Player of the Month award at Marseille

When Arsenal signed Tavares last summer, nobody really knew him. He had made just 41 senior appearances for Benfica and came in as a really inexperienced backup to Kieran Tierney.

However, the Portuguese youngster started off the campaign brilliantly. He was so good that Mikel Arteta preferred him over Tierney – a full Scotland international and one of the best left-backs in the Premier League – for a few games.

Tavares’ fortunes, however, took a turn for the worse following the turn of the year. He was hauled off in the first half against Nottingham Forest in the cup and suffered the same fate at half-time against Crystal Palace later.

He really struggled to make an impact, and that convinced Arteta that he wasn’t quite ready for the Premier League.

Tavares was shipped off to Marseille on loan in the summer, and he has been brilliant there.

He scored three goals in five games for the French giants in August, and he has now been deservedly named the Player of the Month.

Tavares wanted a buy-option included in his loan deal

Just 11 days before he was named Marseille’s Player of the Month, Tavares hit out at Arsenal for refusing to include an ‘option to buy’ clause in his loan deal.

His comments definitely suggested that he wants Arsenal to sell him next year.

The 22-year-old said, as quoted by talkSPORT: “At Arsenal, I do not know if it was a problem of competition with Kieran Tierney, but for me that’s not even the point. I came to Marseille to finally be able to play in my position.

“When signing with Marseille, I wanted to have an option to buy, but Arsenal refused. With my agents, we always wanted this purchase option, but Arsenal didn’t.”
