Arsenal linked with player Ray Parlour once said he prefers to Sadio Mane

Arsenal are leading the race to sign Raheem Sterling – and a former Gunners star claimed he was better than Sadio Mane back in 2019.

According to The Sun, Arsenal are leading the race to sign the England international.

Tottenham are also keen in the player who could leave the champions during the summer transfer window.

The Gunners won’t be in Europe next season and will need to set their stall out accordingly.

Celtic fans left short-changed by Sky Sports once again

Signing stellar players won’t come easily and perhaps targeting Sterling is a wise idea.

The 26-year-old scored 14 goals and claimed 12 assists during the 2020/21 campaign, despite some critics suggesting he’s been poor.

Sterling will turn his attention to England duty now. He was named in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man Euro 2020 squad yesterday afternoon.

Sterling to Arsenal: Ray Parlour would surely endorse it

The £300,000-a-week forward has proved a superb signing for Manchester City. He has scored 114 goals and claimed 87 assists from 292 appearances.

Back in 2019, Parlour waxed lyrical about the player, saying he preferred him to Liverpool star Sadio Mane.

He told TalkSPORT: “His career has been so good, you’d think he’d been playing for years and years, but he’s only 24.

“What about this one – Mane has been brilliant for Liverpool this year but who would you have, Mane or Sterling?

“It would be close, Mane has been excellent, but I would definitely have Sterling.”

Arsenal have to pounce for Sterling

Signing the flyer won’t be easy but you have to say in their current predicament, Sterling would be a coup for Arsenal.

He is quick, takes players on and more crucially, knows where the back of the net is.

Arteta will be desperate to lead the Gunners back into Europe and Sterling would be the ideal signing to help with those ambitions.

The Arsenal boss has worked with Sterling before and if City deem him surplus, he could jump at the chance to join Arsenal.
