Reported Arsenal target Houssem Aouar has dealt the Gunners a blow with his latest update on his future, in conversation with RMC Sport.

The 22-year-old is reported to have been one of Mikel Arteta’s top transfer targets last summer, with ESPN claiming Arsenal were frontrunners for his signature at one point.

However, the Gunners were unable to get their hands on Aouar before the transfer window shut, though they did manage to sign another of their main targets in Thomas Partey.

According to Football London, Arsenal remain interested in the France international, and Lyon are apparently aware of this too.

Aouar was disciplined at the French club after failing to take part in a post-match warm-up with teammates last week, and missed out on the squad in the win over Reims on Sunday.

Despite this, the midfielder has made clear his commitment to the team, telling RMC Sport (translated by Football London): “I’ll be Lyon until next summer, at least.”

Asked about rumours linking with an exit, he added: “I do not see how I could be unhappy in my city, in my club. That is something that I do not understand (rumours he’s unhappy).

“I am very happy to be here, I took the decision to stay with the club that formed me, I savour every day I have here.

“Everything that I want, is to put this club back in its rightful place with my team-mates. I am very happy to be here, we have an enormous amount of ambitions for this season.”

Arsenal appeared to have a brief glimmer of hope in terms of their hopes of signing Aouar in January after the events of last week, but the player has made his intentions clear.

He’s seemingly left the door open on a potential end-of-season move, however, and given his quality – Pep Guardiola himself called him “incredible” two years ago – there’s bound to be a lot of interested suitors in seven months’ time.
