Arsenal offloaded quite a few players in the January transfer window.

Arguably one of the most surprising Gunners departures involved Calum Chambers, who joined Aston Villa.

According to The Mirror, Arsenal allowed the 26-year-old to join Villa for free.

Chambers’ contract was up in the summer, so the Gunners reportedly cut the deal short out of goodwill.

This meant the defender could start playing first-team football right away instead of being on standby at Arsenal.

And Chambers is certainly shining for Villa, with five claret-and-blue appearances so far, including four starts.

On Thursday, the former Arsenal ace got his first goal for his new club, and in some style.

Villa were already cruising 2-0 at Leeds when Tyrone Mings set Chambers up in the box.

He let rip with a ferocious effort which soared into Illan Meslier’s top-corner to seal a 3-0 victory at Elland Road.

“It’s an outrageous finish from Chambers,” Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison said. “Meslier could only watch.”

Here is the video of the goal:

Chambers remained a largely unused member of Mikel Arteta’s squad this season, but he stepped up when needed.

While it was sad to see him leave Arsenal, it was good that the Gunners amicably parted company with him and enabled him to secure first-team football right away.

At the same time, Arsenal did save some money on his salary which can then be reinvested in summer.

And Villa got themselves a top defender who is also capable of scoring worldies.
