Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn has spoken of his frustration with Gunners striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, as the Gabon forward continues to struggle in front of goal.
Aubameyang hasn’t scored since the opening day of the season and, after signing a big-money new deal in the summer, has started to draw the ire of some Arsenal fans.
The 31-year-old has played out wide in the main rather than as a number nine. And Winterburn believes that the position Mikel Arteta is putting Aubameyang in may be affecting the striker’s goal output.
“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has certainly been less effective out wide. If you look back at all the games that he has played for Arsenal, he has started from the wide positions and has been scoring a lot of goals,”Winterburn said. (quotes via Goal)
“The fans will be rightly frustrated because he [Aubameyang] is the top goal scorer and currently, he is not putting the ball in the back of the net, not just because he is playing out wide, there is a lot more to it than that.”
The form of Aubameyang is a far cry from the goals he’s scored over the last few seasons. Indeed, the Gabon ace shared the golden boot with Sadio Mane and Mo Salah.
Furthermore, Aubameyang was key as Arsenal won against Man City in the FA Cup final in the summer, and looks a far cry from that sort of form at the moment.
Aubameyang needs to do more, Arsenal rely on him – TBR View
Winterburn makes a good point here with the Arsenal striker, he simply has to do more and contribute in front of goal.
There’s no doubting from anyone that he can do it. His record speaks for itself at the end of the day.
But the Gunners are so reliant on him that the longer this drought goes on, the more concerning and worrying it becomes for Mikel Arteta.
