Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes Liverpool pair Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are on their way to becoming the greatest defensive partnership the Premier League has ever seen.
They have been in stunning form together this season since Gomez came back into the side to replace the injured Joel Matip.
Since Gomez replaced the Cameroonian at the back, the duo have conceded just one goal in 990 minutes of league football.

The Reds are far and away the most solid side in the division, and ex-Invincible Keown has been blown away by Jurgen Klopp’s go-to centre-back pairing, stating again he believes they can become the best pairing the English top-flight has ever seen.
He wrote in his latest Daily Mail column: “It’s incredible. Their pace is frightening and they ooze class in the way they travel round the pitch.
“van Dijk, the 2019 Ballon d’Or runner-up, is clearly ahead of his team-mate. He is stronger in the air and naturally more of a leader. But Gomez is not far behind. They work together brilliantly and we are finally getting the chance to witness that.”
TBR’s view – VVD and Gomez need years of dominance
The partnership is still relatively fresh, but it is most definitely heading for greatness.

Arguably, van Dijk and Gomez need a few more years playing consistently together and some titles under their belt before they can be considered the greatest.
Dutchman van Dijk has made a truly incredible impact, and if Gomez can realise his exciting potential, a debate can certainly be had about them being better than the likes of Rio Ferdinand/Nemanja Vidic and John Terry/Ricardo Carvalho.
