Arsenal drew 1-1 with Brighton on Sunday to all but end their hopes of finishing in the top four of the Premier League. Only an eight-goal swing between them and Spurs on the final day will see them earn a fourth-place finish.
The Gunners boss Unai Emery can still see his side qualify for the Champions League but they will now need to win the Europa League.
It will call for a major overhaul of the Arsenal squad during the summer with defenders likely to be high on the list of targets for Emery.
Samuel Umiti of Barcelona has been linked with the Gunners in the past. The deal may now be in doubt due to concerns over the Frenchman’s fitness, according to football.london.
News of interest petering out in Umtiti could see Arsenal pursue other targets. One of those is Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma, according to The Sun.
The 24-year-old is set to return to the Blues for pre-season after a successful loan stint at Everton, who are also keen to keep him on a more permanent basis.
In 31 games for the Toffees, he has highlighted his undoubted potential to become a top Premier League defender.
The Frenchman would represent a massive upgrade on their current defensive options; whilst he is still at an age where he will continue improving.
Zouma is comfortable on the ball, is solid in the tackle and reads the game superbly well.
According to Spotrac, he earns £40k-a-week so that won’t exactly make him expensive either.
If Umtiti is a no-go then Zouma should be Arsenal’s number one priority this summer.
