‘He’ll be a star in the Euros’: Pundit says Arsenal have an ‘outstanding’ talent in their ranks
Paul McStay has backed Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney to be a star at Euro 2020, while speaking on Go Radio.
The former Celtic midfielder is delighted to have seen Tierney become a top-draw left-back since leaving Parkhead two years ago. Arsenal spent £25million (BBC) to seal a deal in 2019, which remains a Scottish record for an outgoing player.
Tierney has proven to be Mikel Arteta’s number one choice at full-back since the Spaniard arrived at the Emirates Stadium. His form has also left the Gunners caught between a rock and a hard place trying to find a backup who can replace him if needed (The Athletic).
McStay has no doubt that Tierney will hold down a key role for Scotland at Euro 2020, as well. The 24-year-old has played the full 90 minutes in each of the Tartan Army’s last eight games in all competitions.
“He’s doing well down there, isn’t he?” McStay said. “I think he gave everything to Celtic when he was there. I’m just delighted to see him doing so well down in England.
“I definitely think he’ll be a star in the Euros. He’s an outstanding talent and playing down south, competing against better teams week in, week out has certainly helped him.”
This summer’s tournament is Scotland’s first European Championship since 1996 and just their third appearance ever. They kick start the group stage against the Czech Republic on Monday before facing England at Wembley next Friday.
TBR’s view: Arsenal still need more from Tierney
While Tierney has become a fans’ favourite in north London, Arsenal will want to see more from him next season. The defender has occupied a key role in Arteta’s plans but has to add greater consistency to his output and availability.
He missed 17 games last season with various issues. And despite pushing up the pitch frequently, only offered five assists – four in the Premier League – and just one came before the turn of the year.
But Arteta’s main focus for now will be Tierney getting through Euro 2020 unscathed so that he can kick start the new campaign on time.
