Arsenal: January transfers unlikely; Draxler wants move; Leipzig enter race for Dembele
According to the Telegraph, Arsenal are not planning any first-team transfers in the January transfer window, despite many supporters wanting them to improve their current squad. Their victory at the weekend lifted them to second in the league and it looks like the Gunners could be major players in the title race this season. Santi Cazorla’s injury has been a huge blow and there were hopes that he would be replaced in January, as Arsenal look much better when they have a creative midfielder in the centre of the park.
The main worry for Arsenal is that their title rivals all look like they will strengthen in the January transfer window and therefore the Gunners may lost momentum in the title race. Their squad is hardly complete as there are still noticeable weaknesses compared to the other top sides in the league. The next month could have an effect on the transfer business that Arsenal do as if they have a strong festive period, there may be no need to strengthen. However, if Arsenal lose ground on the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, Arsene Wenger may be forced into the window against his will.
One player that Arsenal have been linked with throughout the years is Julian Draxler and the German midfielder wants to quit his current club Wolfsburg in January. The Mirror report that Premier League clubs could be on high alert as there is a strong possibility of bringing the Euro 2016 star to England. He was booed by his own supporters at the weekend and his position at the club is beginning to look difficult.
“I don’t think I need to tell anybody what [being booed] does to a person – it certainly doesn’t help you.
“There’s no doubt it makes it hard for you to perform on the field.”
“I can understand the fans, though. They have every right to do that. I said in the summer the way I feel and I stand by that.”
He is an excellent midfielder and one that could play in a number of positions, including in the number ten role and on either flank. His ability to beat players and create chances mean that he would be an exciting addition for any Premier League team. There are positions that Arsenal need to strengthen in first, but he would improve their starting eleven and it would be a move that makes a huge statement to the rest of the league.
Finally, the Express reports that RB Leipzig have joined Manchester United and Arsenal in the race to sign Celtic striker Moussa Dembele. The young striker has scored 17 goals in all competitions for the Scottish side this season and his performances have been attracting interest from some of the biggest sides in Europe. The German club believe that they are in a good position to sign the Frenchman as they can offer him first team football. They would see him as a replacement for Timo Werner, who is expected to join Bayern Munich.
Arsenal have been interested in Dembele, but it is likely that they saw him more as a summer target rather than one for January. They already have Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Giroud, Lucas Perez and a returning Danny Welbeck to compete for the striking position. There is no great need for them to splash a huge sum of cash on Dembele, despite his undoubted potential. They also wouldn’t be able to offer him regular first team football, unlike Leipzig. It is likely that Arsenal have scouted Dembele, but it isn’t the right time for them to make a move and that is why I don’t think they will be the ones landing the impressive young striker.
