Arsenal have reportedly made their move for £339m attacker, Arteta could get his own Ronaldo - TBR View
Arsenal are likely to bolster their attacking ranks at the end of the season.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s January departure left the Gunners with just two senior strikers in their ranks.
In addition, Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are both out of contract in summer.
Therefore, Mikel Arteta and Edu will probably bring one, if not more, new strikers to the Emirates Stadium.
Plenty of names have been linked with Arsenal in recent months, such as Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus.
The Telegraph has claimed that Lille’s Jonathan David, Roma star Tammy Abraham and Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin are targets too.
Now, if reports are to be believed, the Gunners could be eyeing a player once compared to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Spanish outlet ABC – via the Daily Express – have reported that Arsenal have enquired about Memphis Depay.
As well as the Gunners, West Ham and Juventus are also said to have asked about the 28-year-old.
Depay joined Barcelona on a free transfer last summer, penning a contract with a reported €400m (£339m) release clause.
He has 12 goals and two assists from 27 La Liga appearances this season.
However, the arrival of Aubameyang in January has meant the Dutchman has often played out wide under Xavi.
Depay only signed a two-year contract at Barca, so his current deal expires at the end of next season.
And Barca may well look to cash in and make a profit on a player they signed for nothing.
“A little bit like Cristiano”
Back in 2015, Manchester United signed Depay from PSV Eindhoven, arriving to much fanfare.
In an interview on MUTV – via The Mirror – Voetbal International journalist Thijs Slegers said: “Memphis is a little bit like Cristiano.
“They have similar qualities, although there are of course areas where Memphis is inferior. However, his determination to be the best is where I see the real similarity with Cristiano.”
Sadly, Memphis struggled at Old Trafford, though he has certainly developed as a player since.
The Netherlands international may feel he has unfinished business in the Premier League.
If Arsenal were to get their hands on Depay, they’d have an incredibly talented and extremely motivated forward in their ranks.
